Antoine Godeau was a 17^th-century French bishop and Bible commentator. One of his lesser known works is “Les Tableaux de la Penitence”, a work of biographical and theological sketches of notable Biblical figures and groups seeking penance. Godeau provides commentary and notes on figures such as Adam and Eve, Nebuchadnezzar, John the Baptist, Lazarus and his resurrection, the prodigal son, Mary Magdalene, and many others.

The draw of this 1707 edition is the inclusion of impressive, full-page engravings.
