1785 ENORMOUS Holy BIBLE Newcastle ART Commentary Swiss Protestant Osterwald
This enormous, folio Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a ‘second reformation’. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule,
“Osterwald made use of the original Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and the French hand German version- both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense.” (D&M 3814)
Published in Newcastle upon Tyne, this huge Holy Bible is utterly filled with commentary and annotations by numerous contributors including Thomas Stackhouse, Matthew Henry, John Wesley, Benjamin Kennicott, and so many others.
While the commentary and size of this Bible are highly desirable, the enormous, full-page illustrations make this Bible one of the best of its kind.
