Robert of Avesbury was a 14^th-century English historian whose eyewitness accounts, found in manuscript form, are known to be some of the most rare, credible sources from 14^th-century events. He focused primarily on the life and reign of Edward III, but also included descriptions of European wars, and notable political letters of Michael de Northburgh. This chronicle was published in 1720 under the title ‘Mirabilibus Gestis’ and is one of the only reliable accounts of the black plague and the bizarre rituals of Flagellants.

One interesting notable scene was recorded by Avesbury.

“Over six hundred men came to London from Flanders. Each wore a cap marked with a red cross in front and behind. Each had in his right hand a scourge with three tails. Each tail had a knot and through the middle of it there were sometimes sharp nails fixed. They marched naked in a file one behind the other and whipped themselves with these scourges on their naked and bleeding bodies.” (Thompson)
