1673 GREEK Hierocles of Alexandria Golden Verses Pythagoras Philosophy Plutarch
Hierocles of Alexandria was a 5th-century Greek writer. The only surviving work of Hierocles, who studied under Plutarch, was his commentary on Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It included a treatise on providence and fate and his arguments against predestination, magic practices, and superstitions. However, his views did not favor the providence of a divine God, rather focused on irrational worldly needs. Although Christianity was not mentioned in his works, his writings have been used to reconcile traditions between Greek orthodox and Christian beliefs. (Mozley).
