1730 1ed Slavery Voyages of Marchais AFRICA Whydah Maps Labat Sea Monsters 2v
Jean-Baptiste Labat was a 17th-century Frenchman known for his eclectic interests including exploration. His most famous works concern voyages in America, the West Indies, and the Caribbean. In 1730, Labat published an account of the voyages of Reynaud Desmarchais, a captain of slave ship that sailed exclusively between the African Gold Coast and the West Indies.
‘Voyage du Chevalier des Marchais en Guinée’ describes many of the procedures and regulations that were involved in slave trade as well as the economic and commercial influence of slavery. In addition to discussions on slaves, Labat includes information on fish, animals, geography, and …sea monsters! (i.e. sharks).
These volumes from the 1730 first edition include 27 exquisite illustrations including a view of the coronation procession of the King of Whydah.
