1891 CUSTER Indian Wars era Tenting Old Camp Ground Kittredge Civil War Songs
A self-taught American musician Walter Kittredge is best known for the war-themed songs he wrote during the Civil War. Before the war, he traveled as a minstrel throughout the Northeast both alone and with the famous Hutchinson Family Singers. Kittredge wrote over 500 songs and ballads sung by both the North and the South, the most famous of which include “Tenting on the Old Camp Ground” and “When They Come Marching Home”. “Tenting On The Old Camp Ground” (also known as “Tenting Tonight“) was a popular song during the Civil War, particularly to the Union Army. This song is about the life of a solider, missing home and loved ones and the men dying or wounded in battle.
This 1891 edition includes excellent illustrations by Charles Copeland with the words of Kittredge’s famous song throughout the book. The song, with its original musical score, is also printed at the end.
