The Popish Plot was one of the two most iconic conspiracies of 17^th-century England. Like the Gunpowder Plot, the Popish Plot alleged that members of the Catholic Church would assassinate King Charles II, something many Protestants would not take seriously or understand.

After the Popish Plot dissolved in December of 1680 and numerous men were charged with treason, Anglican preacher Thomas Jekyll preached a curious, anti-Catholic sermon which was intended to instruct other Protestants on the effects of such a conspiracy. This sermon was published the following year under the title ‘Popery, a Great Mystery of Iniquity’.
