1655 1ed Ercolani Heroines Solitude Anti-Feminism Female SAINTS Chastity Thais
Girolamo Ercolani’s “Le Eroine Della Solitudine Sacra” was a 17th-century treatise written on the lives and behaviors of iconic female saints and religious women of the Catholic Church. This work is a bit controversial, however. While Ercolani claims to have the utmost regard for women, his stance is such that women’s best qualities are chastity, silence, seclusion, and redemption. Ercolani condemned women’s sexuality and sought to demonstrate appropriate repentance through isolation and solitude. (Heller).
This work includes sketches of the lives of 15 notable figures including Thais – describing their condemnation, repentance of sin, and eventual sainthood and vows to chastity. Other notable names include:
- Apollinaria of Egypt
- Euphrosyne of Alexandria
- Theodora of Alexandria
- Teottiste of Lesbia
- Saint Dymphna
