1720 Descartes Philosophy Jesuit Daniel Horology Cartesian Astrology
Gabriel Daniel was a French Jesuit historian who wrote out against famous philosophers such as Pascal and Descartes. One of his most famous treatises of “Voyage of the World of Descartes” in which he seeks to disprove the scientific theories of Rene Descartes. It was in this book that Daniel gave commentary on his beliefs that the human soul was not immortal, but that it represented the entirety of natural philosophy. While he himself did not consider himself a Cartesian, his doctrines were closely tied to Cartesian principles. (Kors, p.116)
This 1720 French edition of Gabriel Daniel’s preeminent work is illustrated with a dozen in-text figures depicting views of the solar system, sun, and planetary orbit and how it relates to natural philosophy, horology, and the use of a tourbillon, or time-keeping mechanics.
