1686 Frankish Monk Ratramnus Eucharist Supper Carolingian Catholic Blood Jesus
Ratramnus was a 9th-century Frankish monk who served the Corbie Monastery. Ratramnus was a Carolingian theologian who is primarily remembered for his work ‘On the Body and Blood of the Lord’. This book was a direct response to Paschasius Radbertus’s treatise of a similar title which described the elements of the Lord’s Supper, or Eucharist as it pertains to the blood of Christ. Ratramnus argued that the elements did not physically change property, that they remained bread and wine and did not become Jesus’s blood and flesh – a debate which has lingered for centuries within the Catholic Church.
