Darius Lyman wrote an attack on slavery, particularly those in the North who were not fighting against slavery, called ‘Leaven for Doughfaces.’ “Doughface” was a term to describe politicians who had no backbone and so were pliable like dough thus his ‘leaven’ was hoping to get them to rise to stand up against slavery.
