1797 Osterwald BIBLE + Psalms & Paraphrases English Scottish Edinburgh Kerr
An important Osterwald English Bible from 1797! This charming, pocket-sized Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a ‘second reformation’. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule,
“Osterwald made use of the original Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and the French hand German version- both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense.” (D&M 3814)
This Moroccan leather-bound Holy Bible includes portions of the Old Testament along with two different printings of the Psalms. This particular Bible was printed in 1807 and uses the 1797 Olsterwald Old Testament alongside the widely popular ‘Translations and Paraphrases in Verse’.
