John Muir, also known as “John of the Mountains” and “Father of the National Parks”, was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, environmental philosopher, and an early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. In 1881, Muir returned to Alaska joining an expedition on the USS Corwin which landed at Wrangel Island. The entirety of his experiences there along with journal entries are recorded in his book ‘The Cruise of the Corwin’. This book is notable for containing descriptions of the indigenous Eskimo tribes in Alaska and St. Lawrence Island.
