Known mostly for his Latin poems, Jean Baptiste de Santeul wrote a plethora of hymns that were published in 17th-century Breviaries. Santeul was a French-born poet who wrote under the name Santolius Victorinus. His complete collection of hymns and hymn texts were published in “Hymni Sacri et Novi” which first appeared in 1689.
This 1698 edition was the first enlarged edition of ‘Hymni’ and includes Santeul’s hymns for all occasions of the Catholic liturgical year. In addition to the Latin text, this book contains hymns with music notation – chant with neumes.
