1856 1ed Great West CALIFORNIA Texas America Gold Mining INDIANS Railroads RARE
C.W. Dana’s ‘The Great West’ is a fascinating account of the American west, following the surge in migration westward after the Gold Rush. This book functioned as an emigration guide, giving both physical and historical descriptions of the West. Dana focused on each state – Ohio, Missouri, Texas, California, etc. – the Octagon Settlement Company, Vegetarian Settlement, rivers, and most importantly the travelling routes of the West.
According to Wagner-Camp:
“This book is a compilation of information including statistics, speeches and pamphlets concerning the United States west of the Alleghenies. ‘The West’ for Dana embraces the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas Territory, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Washington Territory and California. The author describes a number of routes to the west.”
This book also includes a significant amount of information on gold mining, railroad, and Native American Indians throughout the Plains. Note this edition includes statistics and speeches by Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, and Fremont.
