Vanity Fair is best known for full-page, color lithographs of world celebrities and dignitaries including artists, athletes, royalty, scientists, authors, and scholars. More than 2000 of these images appeared, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of the period. According to author and editor Jehu Junior,
“The Vanity Fair Portraits are and remain the only work of their kind ever attempted; and as such they must always hold a special and distinct place as a permanent record of men of eminence in the nineteenth century.”
