1826 AFRICA Denham Travels in Sierra Leonne SLAVE Rescue MAPS Sahara Desert 2v
Dixon Denham was a 19th-century English explorer who is best known for his short-lived career as governor of Sierra Leonne. In 1822, Denham embarked upon an African voyage with Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton. While there, Denham and crew encountered numerous slave-trade exploits and did their part to rescue slaves. Following the mission, Denham aided the British plan to help settle rescued slaves in England.
The narrative of Denham and Clapperton’s voyage was published by Murray in a fine, two-volume work filled with impressive full-page engravings depicting local tribes and people groups, culture and dress, architecture, and African landscapes. Note the hand-colored engraving of a desert oasis in this 1826 edition. This edition also includes remarkable folding maps!
