- Inscribed to Mr. David N. Carvalho. David Nunes Carvalho (1845-1925) was a famous paper, ink, and handwriting analyst and author, whose forensic work was acknowledged by Arthur Conan Doyle, and whose testimony played a major role in the second trial of Alfred Dreyfus. Though his expertise would fail to acquit the accused officer at the trial, this evidence contributed to Dreyfus’s eventual exoneration. In this inscription, author Kuhne calls Carvalho “the Peer of Handwriting Experts.” David Nunes Carvalho was also the son of Solomon Nunes Carvalho (1815–1897), American painter, photographer, author and inventor. He may be best known as an explorer who traveled through the territory of Kansas, Colorado and Utah with John C. Frémont on his fifth expedition. Many famous images of the Old West are based on images he developed while on the trail, a feat few (if any) had before achieved.
