John Quarles, son of the notable 16th-century English emblemist, became well-known Royalist poet best remembered for his epic poem “Fons Lachrymarum”. This collection of poems was written during his time in exile – banished from England to Flanders for his role in the English Civil War. The poems exhibit themes of meditation, complaints, and lament during a time of great unrest in England. Much of this work was based on the Old Testament book of Lamentations of Jeremiah and includes an elegy on Royalist Charles Lucas and his time as a prisoner during the civil wars.
