Mateo Aleman was a 16^th-century Spanish writer easily best-known for his celebrated novel “Guzman de Alfarache”. It was incredibly popular after its first printing in 1599 and went through countless editions and translations in the years following.  It tells the story of a low-class, poor street boy who grows into lavish tastes and his discoveries into the debauchery of society.

This rare English edition was published in 1634 and was printed with an edition of his lesser-known tragi-comedy “Calisto and Melisea”, or “The Spanish Bawd”.
