Claude Paradin was a 16^th-century French heraldic and emblematic writer most known for his illustrated historical works. His most influential work was ‘Devises Heroiques’, an illustrated version of the Old Testament. Each episode is illustrated by a woodcut and is paired with a short French poem which mirrors similar emblem publications on the Bible that were published in Paris and Lyon in the 16^th-century. This particular 1583 edition contains 247 engravings from Bernard Salomon, which is 16 more than previous editions (the book of Numbers has 11 new, and Joshua has 5).
