Jules Verne’s “Doctor Ox, and other stories” is a collection of short tales including three that are among Jules Verne’s earliest:

• “A Drama in the Air” (appeared in a periodical in 1851, his second story)
• “Master Zacharius” (1854, his fourth)
• “A Winter amid the Ice” (1855, his fifth)
• “Dr. Ox’s Experiment” itself did not appear until 1872
• “Ascent of Mont Blanc” by Jules’ brother Paul Verne

This 1874 first edition of “Docteur Ox” was published in Paris by Hetzel. Like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. This particular issue features the ‘JV’ on the front cover and, while the ads have no date on them, all of the listed Verne titles are pre-1874 works.
