1607 Robert Bellarmine 1ed Pope Paul V Letters Catholic Church Galileo interest
Robert Bellarmine was one of the most important and influential Jesuit cardinals of the 16th and early 17th-century. During the May 1605 papal conclave, Bellarmine was considered a candidate for the papacy; however, Pope Paul V was ultimately chosen. Early in Paul V’s papacy, Bellarmine wrote a series of letters which supported the newly elected pope discussing catholic doctrine, early church fathers and martyrs, and even ecclesiastical law. It wasn’t until many years later that tensions arose between Bellarmine and Paul V. In 1616, Bellarmine advised Paul V against Galileo Galilei’s heliocentric views; a case which has become known as the Galileo Affair.
This 1607 printing of Bellarmine’s letters was published only two years into Paul V’s papacy. Printed in German, published in Munich. A rare and important work on the early papacy of Paul V.
