1731 King Mouley Ismael MOROCCO PIRATES Slaves & Slavery Janissaries Busnot RARE
Dominique Busnot was an 18th-century French historian who, after traveling to Morocco numerous times, wrote what became his most famous and important work – “History of Mouley Ismael, King of Morocco”. Mouley Ismael served as king for nearly fifty years and is remembered for expanding Moroccan territory through military strength and diplomacy with European powers. Busnot describes Mouley’s reign as bloodthirsty, having taken French Christians as prisoner by Moroccan pirates. Having spent many years in Morocco negotiating with Moroccan leaders for the release of these prisoners, Busnot wrote this work to convince readers to help financially with the efforts to free the Christian prisoners from Morocco.
This 1731 edition of Busnot’s most famous work was published in Rouen by Pierre Machuse and includes Busnot position on the church’s tradition of pardoning slaves.
