1582 PLATO Gnomologia Greek Maxims Philosophy Politics Dialogues Metaphysics
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”
― Plato
Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher and student of Socrates, known for his contributions to philosophy, particularly in the areas of ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology. His numerous dialogues explored themes of justice, nature, reality, and ideal social concepts. Throughout his dialogues, Plato includes countless maxims, proverbs, and wise sayings which are referred to as ‘gnomologia’. These maxims capture moral and philosophical teachings in short phrases, typical of most proverbial sayings.
This 16th-century printing of Plato’s ‘Gnomologia’ includes both Latin and Greek translation of the phrases with commentary and discussion on each. Note the engraved title page of this 1582 Tournes edition, collected and edited by Niccolo Liburnio.
