Alexander von Humboldt was a Prussian explorer and natural scientist who is best known for his book ‘Cosmos’. This work was one of the most influential and important treatises on natural science from the 19^th-century. In it, Humboldt describes both outer space and physical science on Earth, but gives special attention to the Milky Way Galaxy and the planets.

This book included significant discussions on the evolution of mankind, helping to inspire Charles Darwin to take his scientific explorations. In fact, Darwin himself called Humboldt “the greatest scientific traveler who ever lived”. And while this book had many important attributes, its most lasting legacy was its concept of “unifying science, nature, and mankind” (Downs).
