1863 WEST POINT 1ed History US Military CIVIL WAR American Revolution MAPS
Edward Boynton’s “History of West Point” has proved to be one of the most important biographical histories of American military. At the height of the Civil War, the Union army had endured numerous defeats by the Confederacy and the United States congress was contemplating eliminating West Point altogether. Boynton’s ‘History’, along with the Union victory at Gettysburg, helped the Senate recognize the value of West Point and confirm its importance in training US officers and soldiers.
According to Larned,
“The contents of this book are about equally divided between the two topics named in the title. In the second part the author, who was a captain in the United States army, presents a general view of the school from its organization in 1794 to the date of publication.”
This title was popular amongst American military officers and was known to be in the library of generals such as Ulysses S Grant. It, too, is notably rare with both first and second editions considered challenging to obtain. This 1863 first edition also contains the highly desirable folding map!
