Thomas Jefferson Green was a 19th-century American politician who is curiously much better remembered for his expeditions into Mexico. One of his expeditions ended in disaster. The Mier expedition, as it is commonly known today, began in 1842 when a militia from Texas took up arms at the Mexican border, but the Mexicans defeated Green and the rest of the party at the Battle of Cuidad Mier. While Green survived the battle, he was taken prisoner by the Mexican defenders. Green would ultimately escape from prison and would later write a book recounting his experience in battle, imprisonment, and escape!

First published in 1845, this book is an excellent and highly reliable resource on the Texas / Mexico land disputes of the mid-19th-century.
