- Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553–1617) was a French historian, book collector, and president of the Parlement of Paris. He succeeded his uncle Augustin as président à mortier and used his authority in the interests of religious peace, notably negotiating the Edict of Nantes with the Protestants. However, he considered his crowning achievement to be a complete, unbiased history of his era, which he entitled Historia Sui Temporis. Much of his research was drawn from his own library, which was considered to be one of the glories of Europe and among the finest libraries developed during the Renaissance era. The coat of arms present here is that of Thou and his first wife, Marie de Barbancon de Cany, along with their joint monogram (IAM), which is also embossed on the spine.
