‘Pharsalia’ or ‘On the Civil War’ is an ancient Roman poem detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and the Senate. Lucan discusses the cultural despair experienced in Rome and also exposes many of the flaws that Julius Caesar possessed in his political and military leadership. In addition to historical importance, ‘Pharsalia’ includes elements of the supernatural, dream interpretation, ghosts, and prophetic visions.

 

Translated into French by Georges de Brebeuf. This 1659 edition is desirable because of the 12 full-page engravings by Francois Chauveau, as well as the often-lacking folding map!
