1823 INDIANS 1ed John Hunter Captivity Kickapoo Cherokee Fredonian Rebellion
John Dunn Hunter was an early 19th-century American who was taken prisoner at birth by the Kickapoo Indians. Hunter himself knew nothing of his origins and only took the name Hunter as he claimed to be a proficient hunter. He is best remembered for his role in the Fredonian Rebellion – Texas’s first attempt to secede from Mexico – and the negotiations that he conducted with Cherokee tribes.
However, prior to the Rebellion, which would ultimately cause his death, Hunter wrote a bibliographic sketch of his life among the Indians and the various tribes he encountered while in Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas.
Per Wagner Camp:
“His account of life among the Kansas and Osage Indians and his experiences on the prairies sound entirely credible.”
