Thomas Bowdler was an 18^th-century English physician who was much better known for his literary career. He published an edition of Shakespeare’s plays as well as Gibbon’s “Fall of the Roman Empire”. It was, however, his first published work that was noticed by the public.

While traveling in Holland in 1787, Bowdler was a first-hand witness to the Prussian invasion and became well acquainted with Patriots and their plans to keep William of Orange out of the Dutch throne.

“Letters Written in Holland” was first (and only) published in 1788 and is best-recognized for the two folding maps, both of which are included in this example. It was also the first major work published in English chronicling the Prussian army in the Netherlands.
