1794 Steuben US Army Regulations Military Tactics Cavalry Massachusetts Militia
Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was an important 18th-century Prussian military figure whose influence in the American Revolution was critical. He wrote a book that served as the standard United States drill manual – “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops” – which would be used until the end of the Civil War. It was used in troop and infantry training at Valley Forge beginning in 1779. The book has colloquially been called the army’s ‘blue book.’
This late 18th-century edition covers military conduct and discipline, order of ranks, care of weapons, troop recruitment, handling militia and volunteers, carrying flags and colors, and dealing with absence. It also includes an appendix for the militia of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Militia Act.
