Randle Cotgrave was an early 17th-century English scholar who is primarily remembered for his French and English dictionary. First published in 1611, this lexicon was one of the first, and certainly most thorough dictionaries of its kind.     • Charles Tennant (1768–1838), a Scottish chemist and industrialist. He discovered bleaching powder and founded a dynasty in the weaving and textiles industry. He was also a political reformer, with much of his work culminating in the Reform Bill of 1832; his ideas and active support helped create one of the most productive periods of social progress and reform in Scotland’s history. Additionally, the Tennant family was friends with the poet Robert Burns (1759–1796); in his epistle to “James Tennant of Glenconner” Tennant is mentioned as “wabster (Scots language: weaver) Charlie”, in reference to the occupation Tennant had undertaken.
