1611 Anglican Puritan Richard Hooker Church of England Ecclesiastical Polity
Richard Hooker, a 16th-century English priest, was one of the most prominent and influential theologians that Anglicanism has seen.
“Hooker remains one of the greatest theologians that the English Church has ever possessed; and he conveyed his beliefs in a masterly English prose.”
– F.L. Cross: Oxford Dict. of the Christian Church
In fact, theological reforms would eventually come to be called ‘Anglicanism,’ a term that wasn’t used during his lifetime. He is remembered today for opposing the Puritan extremism, which is evidenced in his two major works – ‘Learned Discourse of Justification’ and ‘Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie.’
‘Ecclesiastical Politie’ is Hooker’s best work and is simply a response to Thomas Cartwright’s principles of Puritanism. It deals with instructions on how to govern churches and is, according to Duncan Forrester, “the first great work of philosophy and theology to be written in English”. This highly rare 1661 3rd edition includes several smaller works as well, including sermons on the Epistle of Jude.
