Jermain Loguen was a 19th-century American slave who, being born into slavery in Tennessee, stole a horse from his owner and fled to Canada with the help of the Underground Railroad. After finding his freedom, Loguen became one of the principal leaders of the Underground Railroad. His autobiography focuses on his experiences as a slave, the horrors of slavery, his daring escape, and the abolitionist cause throughout New York. And while the authorship of this biography is generally attributed to Loguen, some scholars believe that Loguen was assisted by other slaves in writing this book.
