Pasquier Quesnel was a 17^th-century French Jansenist best-remembered for his commentary on the New Testament. This commentary was written to push Jansenist theology and doctrine which, unfortunately, seemed to form numerous phrases that were considered heretical by the Catholic Church. This French edition of the New Testament includes Quesnel’s commentary, published in five tomes.

This particular example is notable for the important provenance. This book features a bookplate of “Comte d’Antioche”. The principality of Antioch was established during the Crusades in the 11^th-century in Syria. At the end of 15^th-century, the Antioch family settled in England near Nernier.

  • Possibly Alphonse de Brotty d’Antioche (1813-1882), a Savoy statesman and envoy of the Kingdom of Sardinia to the Madrid court. He was also a close friend of Count Atanazy Raczyński (or Athanasius Raczynski; 1788–1874), a Polish count and diplomat in Prussian service, and a noted art critic who built a notable collection of paintings during his long stays in major European metropolises. In his will, Raczynski gifted d’Antioche several chests of manuscripts.
