1729 Bibla Sacra Vulgate BIBLE Latin Vatable Estienne Pagnino 2v HUGE FOLIOS
An extremely rare and highly desirable ‘Biblia Sacra’ published in Paris in 1729. This beautiful set features the Vulgate and a translation by Sante Pagnino edited by Henri Estienne, Nicholas Henri and Michaud. The translation comes directly from Estienne’s 1545 text from the original Hebrew (published in 1557). And while these translations are important, this edition features the commentary and supplemental notes of Francois Vatable and Dom Calmet.
Francois Vatable was a 16th-century Hebrew language scholar who is individually responsible for the restoration of Hebrew language study in France.
The second volume of this two-volume set is dated 1745, with the delay in printing due to collation needs, described in a notice to the reader in said volume. Darlow and Moule says of this edition:
“A fresh edition of a Bible first published in 1721. The preface to vol. 1 states that the Vulgate text follows. Vitre’s Paris edition, while Pagninus’ version is reprinted partly from Estienne’s edition of 1557, and partly from Servetus edition of 1542, with some corrections. The Prayer of Manasses and 3 and 4 Esdras are placed after Job at the end of vol 1. From the preface to the Psalter it appears that the ‘new’ version given in that book is not Pagninus’ translation, but one made by Simeon de Muis: this version, which was made from the Hebrew, but conformed as far as possible to the Vulgate, had been published at Paris in 1630 and again in 1650.”
