Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish priest during the 15th-century, who is remembered for founding the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits. He composed various spiritual exercises, wrote simple meditations and prayers which contributed to the growth of Jesuit doctrine.

Spanish Jesuit author Pedro de Ribadeneyra wrote a notable biography of the life of Saint Ignatius. Ribadeneyra was a close friend of Loyola and in 1572, published his “Life of Loyola” which became the first biography of Saint Ignatius. Curiously, Ribadeneyra stated that Loyola never performed any miracles –most authors claimed he did.
