Cornelius de Pauw was an 18th-century Dutch historian who is primarily known for his studies on ethnology – he published works on Native American Indians, Egyptians, and Chinese people. It was in this work, “Recherches Philosophiques,” that de Pauw sought to deliver descriptions of foreign peoples to French readers. The work includes much of the following:
