William Fogg’s ‘Land of the Arabian Nights’ is an impressive survey of the middle east, focusing on the history of Arabia, Persia, Jerusalem, and Baghdad. The most desirable aspect of this work, however, is the abundance of full-page illustrations showing ancient ruins and castles, iconic buildings, landscapes, and views of local people.

This 1875 printing of ‘Arabistan’ features an introduction by the famous travel writer Bayard Taylor. Taylor’s notes and reports have been referenced for decades since the mid-1800s. Taylor’s writings have even been quoted by politicians and authors who supported his racial discriminatory views.
