1782 MOROCCO Portugal Wars 1ed Luis Loureiro Siege of Safim North Africa MOORS
Luis de Loureiro was a 16th-century Portuguese naval captain who was known for his lifelong battle against the Moors in Morocco. His career began with the Siege of Safim in 1510 when Portugal was attempting to expand into North Africa. Portugal sought to create a network of fortresses and trading posts along the Moroccan shore and Loureiro was a catalyst in establishing these strongholds.
Author Lourenco Galvao published an account of Loureiro’s military career with special attention given to serving as captain in Arzila, Mazagao, and Tangier where he died in combat. This work, which was first published in 1782, is perhaps the best work of its kind being the best source of 16th-century diplomacy between Morocco and Portugal.
