Written by Dutch historian Lambert van den Bos, “Konincklyk Treur-Toonneel” covers an enormous history of the Roman Empire from the reign of Julius Caesar through the year 1500. While Bos does not provide biographical sketches of each ruler, he does focus on the most notable including Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Commodus, and Diocletian.

Bos continues by highlighting legendary Dutch and Scottish kings (such as Viking king Ragnar and Scottish king Eugene VIII), as well as Turkish and Byzantine kings.

This 1657 first edition states volume one; however, there is no indication that a second volume was ever published. This work features numerous full-page engravings including portraits and iconic scenes.
