1504 Italian Renaissance ART Garuic De Sculptura + 1505 Pontano ALDINE Astronomy
An exceedingly rare, early 16th-century, post-incunable printing of two classical authors of 15th-century Italian authors Giovanni Pontano and Pomponius Gauric.
Pomponius Gauric was an Italian humanist who is primarily remembered for his bronze-sculpting treatise ‘De Sculptura’ where he describes the function and role of 15th-century science in bronze forming.
Giovanni Pontano was a 15th-century Italian poet who was best known for his works of prose; works which are still considered useful to literature students of the 21st-century. His works include:
- ‘Urania’ and ‘Meteororum’– poems describing astronomical sciences and mythology, constellations
- ‘Lepidina’ – poem on the mythological marriage of Sebeto to Parthenope
- ‘De Hortis Hesperidum’ – poem on orange trees
- ‘Hendecasyllaborum’ – eleven syllable poems on personal topics
- ‘Tumuli’
- ‘Neniae’
This 1504-05 printing of the works of Pontano and Gauric was published by Giunta in Florence and Aldo Manuzio in Venice, and retains many of the features that were common amongst 15th-century printings.
