1514 ALDINE 1st ed Quintilian Institutio Oratoria Rhetoric Speeches ROME Venice
One of the earliest books on teaching public speaking!
Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, or Quintilian, was a 1st-century Roman scholar most remembered for his theoretical textbook, ‘Institutio Oratoria’. This work deals with the foundations and development of teaching orations and public speaking. Quintilian’s most important point was that speeches provided the message of the speaker being a ‘good man’ and that there is a direct correlation between the quality of a speech and the quality of a man’s character. This book was known to have significant influence on Martial, Seneca, Juvenal, and Saint Augustine, who all credited Quintilian with focusing their orations.
This 1514 first Aldine edition of Quintilian was published by the famed Aldus Manutius in Venice.
