“He how always desires is always poor.”

– Claudian

Claudian was a 4th-century B.C. poet who wrote poetry and speeches specifically for Roman Emperor Honorius on mythology and early Roman wars. Early 16th-century printings of Claudian are exceedingly rare, particularly examples in a pristine of shape as this. This Florentine edition was published in 1519. This collection of Claudian’s works includes the following epistles and poems:

  • ‘In Rufinum’ (a letter against Byzantine consul Rufinus)
  • ‘De Bello Gildonico’ (essay on the Gildonic Revolt)
  • ‘Epithalamium de Nuptiis Honorii’ (on the marriage of Honorius and Maria)
  • ‘Panegyrics’
  • ‘In Eutropium’ (a letter against consul Eutropius)
  • ‘De Bello Gothico’ (essay on the Gothic War of 402BC)’
  • Various epigrams
  • ‘De raptu Prosperpinae’ (an epic in 3 books which was never completed)

This edition includes a dedication of Antonio Francino to Francesco Spinello followed immediately by a brief account of the life of Claudian by Pietro Criniti.
