“When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting.”

 – Jerome, Epistle 58

Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his ‘Epistles.’ He devoted the final years of his life to writing commentary for each book of the Bible, a feat which took 15 years.

This 16th-century edition of Jerome’s Bible commentary was published in 1525 in Basel. It includes two separate tomes and contains:

  • Volume 6: Old Testament, Minor prophets – Hosea, Joel Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi
  • Volume 7: Old Testament, Wisdom – Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, Song of Songs (Four Homilies by Origen on the Song of Songs)

This impressive first edition folio was collected and edited by Erasmus of Rotterdam, published around the same time as his debates with Martin Luther.
