Unsure? Ask an Expert!

A unique, one-of-a-kind 16th-century handwritten manuscript on the deeds of purchase by Cistercian monks of the San Martino dei Bocci. This monastery, more commonly known as Valserena Abbey, or the “Chapterhouse of Parma” was established in the 13th-century with the approval of Pope Boniface VIII.

This handwritten document describes the plots of land that were purchased in Valserena to accommodate the buildings, along with negotiations of Abbot Sigismondo Fulchini for the improvement of agriculture and structures of the estate. It also describes Fulchini’s attempts to connect the abbey to the Chiaravalle Milanese, a monastery in Milan.

Written in 1526, this manuscript is truly a remarkable piece with each page transcribed on vellum. While the text is difficult to read in places, a printed “historical context” and “content” is provided for ease of reading.
