Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Roberto Valturio was a 15th-century Italian engineer known solely for his treatise on military history. ‘De Re Militari’ focuses on all aspects of warfare, but divides the work into main topics – the qualities and virtues of a good leader, ancient Roman military styles, religious customs and beliefs during war, battlefield tactics and maneuvers, location for encampments, use of scouts and explorers, defensive vs offensive weapons, artillery, naval warfare and types of boats, and even a section on astrology and use of stars to guide through battle.

This unbelievable, pristine first edition is filled with 85 incredible woodcut engravings of various types of artillery and siege weapons, trebuchet, ballista, catapults, flags, battering rams, and war tools – even elaborate, fantastical weapons such as an enormous mobile siege tower designed to look like a dragon!

This work was highly influential and oft referenced, as is evidenced by its inclusion in the libraries of Louis XI of France and Lorenzo de Medici.
