1538 Pragmatic Sanctions of Charles VII Guymier Papal Decrees Medieval Catholic

In 1438, King Charles VII of France issued a decree requiring changes to the appointment of ecclesiastical offices by way of election rather than appointment. This decree directly challenged the authority of the pope causing divides not only between the French throne and the papacy, but the Catholic Church of France and the Vatican. The decrees became known as the Pragmatic Sanctions of Bourges.

Author Cosmas Guymier published an account and commentary on the Pragmatic Sanctions which was first published in 1484. This 1538 Lyon edition is bound in its original vellum – an impressive 16^th-century work!
